About the role

Who we are

Helsing is a defence AI company. Our mission is to protect our democracies. We aim to achieve technological leadership, so that open societies can continue to make sovereign decisions and control their ethical standards.

As democracies, we believe we have a special responsibility to be thoughtful about the development and deployment of powerful technologies like AI. We take this responsibility seriously.

We are an ambitious and committed team of engineers, AI specialists and customer-facing programme managers. We are looking for mission-driven people to join our European teams – and apply their skills to solve the most complex and impactful problems. We embrace an open and transparent culture that welcomes healthy debates on the use of technology in defence, its benefits, and its ethical implications.

The role

As an IT Engineer, you will design, build, and operate the IT and infrastructure that underpins Helsing's European offices and engineering teams. You will work across geographies and functions to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable infrastructure for collaborative work on highly sensitive defence technologies in alignment with applicable regulations, standards, and industry best practice. You will own meaningful parts of our endpoint, identity, network, and cloud estate, and partner closely with Security, Engineering, and IT Support to keep Helsing moving fast without compromising on trust. Your work is an essential ingredient in Helsing's ability to deliver complex systems that answer the challenges of tomorrow's battlefields.

The day-to-day

  • Configure, harden, and operate endpoints (workstations, laptops, servers) across macOS, Windows, and Linux.

  • Design, deploy, and maintain on-prem compute environments built on Linux, including supporting capabilities like virtualisation and Kubernetes.

  • Configure and operate our network and VPN infrastructure across offices and remote workers, including network- and host-based security tooling.

  • Operate and continuously optimise our corporate, development, and customer environments built primarily on Microsoft 365 and Azure, alongside other SaaS solutions.

  • Lead the design and rollout of identity, access, and device management at scale (Entra ID, Conditional Access, MDM).

  • Automate provisioning, configuration, and operational toil using PowerShell, Python, and IaC tooling.

  • Partner with our IT Support team to resolve escalations, eliminate recurring issues, and raise the engineering bar across the IT function.

  • Contribute to security, compliance, and audit activities, and help shape Helsing's IT strategy as we scale

You should apply if you

  • Have 5+ years of experience in IT infrastructure and information security, ideally including time in the defence, government, or other regulated industries.

  • Have worked in an IT Engineering or SysAdmin role with hands-on experience across macOS clients, Linux servers, cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS), and capabilities like Kubernetes.

  • Have managed modern network infrastructure, ideally including administration of network- and host-based security tools.

  • Have strong scripting and automation skills (PowerShell, Python, or IaC tooling such as Terraform/Ansible).

  • Employ strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with the ability to find creative solutions to ambiguous problems.

  • Are collaborative, humble, intellectually curious, and driven to solve hard problems.

  • Your personal values match ours: ownership, initiative, dedication to mission, speed, and inclusiveness.

  • Feel strongly about the right of democracies to defend their sovereignty through the fielding of capabilities that bolster deterrence and decisive action

Nice to have

  • Deep experience with the Microsoft 365 stack (Entra ID, Intune, Exchange, SharePoint, Defender, Purview).

  • Experience operating SIEM stacks and contributing to detection and response workflows.

  • Experience administering MDM tooling such as Intune, Jamf, or JumpCloud at scale.

  • Experience designing or operating Zero Trust network architectures.

  • Familiarity with information security regulations and frameworks relevant to defence work in Europe (e.g. ISO 27001, NIS2, BSI IT-Grundschutz, UK Secure by Design, or equivalents).

  • Experience scaling IT in a fast-growing engineering organisation.

Join Helsing and work with world-leading experts in their fields

  • Helsing’s work is important. You’ll be directly contributing to the protection of democratic countries while balancing both ethical and geopolitical concerns.

  • The work is unique. We operate in a domain that has highly unusual technical requirements and constraints, and where robustness, safety, and ethical considerations are vital. You will face unique Engineering and AI challenges that make a meaningful impact in the world.

  • Our work frequently takes us right up to the state of the art in technical innovation, be it reinforcement learning, distributed systems, generative AI, or deployment infrastructure. The defence industry is entering the most exciting phase of the technological development curve. Advances in our field of world are not incremental: Helsing is part of, and often leading, historic leaps forward.

  • In our domain, success is a matter of order-of-magnitude improvements and novel capabilities. This means we take bets, aim high, and focus on big opportunities. Despite being a relatively young company, Helsing has already been selected for multiple significant government contracts.

  • We actively encourage healthy, proactive, and diverse debate internally about what we do and how we choose to do it. Teams and individual engineers are trusted (and encouraged) to practise responsible autonomy and critical thinking, and to focus on outcomes, not conformity. At Helsing you will have a say in how we (and you!) work, the opportunity to engage on what does and doesn’t work, and to take ownership of aspects of our culture that you care deeply about.

What we offer

  • A focus on outcomes, not time-tracking

  • Competitive compensation and stock options

  • Relocation support

  • Social and education allowances

  • Regular company events and all-hands to bring together employees as one team across Europe

  • A hands-on onboarding program (affectionately labelled “Infraduction”), in which you will be building tooling and applications to be used across the company. This is your opportunity to learn our tech stack, explore the company, and learn how we get things done - all whilst working with other engineering teams from day one (Specifically for engineering and AI)
