xAI is an AI company founded by Elon Musk in 2023 with the mission to build AI systems that understand the universe and advance scientific discovery. The company develops the Grok family of large language models, integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) platform, and operates Colossus, one of the world's largest GPU training clusters, in Memphis, Tennessee. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. xAI raised more than $12B across Series B and Series C rounds in 2024 and further financings in 2025, reaching an implied valuation around $200B. In February 2026 xAI was acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock transaction, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the combined company.
